6. Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verbs given in the brackets :
(8 × ½ = 4 marks)
- The earth moves (move) round the sun.
- Are you not going (go) to America today?
- Reena gave (give) me a novel yesterday.
- Has Mohan sold (sell) his car?
- The train had left before my mother reached (reach) the station.
- How many boys were playing (play) in the ground?
- I finished (finish) my work yesterday.
- The students have just gone (go) out.
Solution:
- moves – The earth is a singular subject and the action is a universal truth, so simple present tense is used.
- going – The sentence is in present continuous tense (Are you not going...).
- gave – The word "yesterday" indicates past tense, so simple past is used.
- sold – The sentence uses present perfect tense (Has + subject + past participle).
- reached – The past perfect tense (had left) requires the second action in simple past.
- playing – The sentence is in past continuous tense (were + verb-ing).
- finished – The word "yesterday" indicates simple past tense.
- gone – The sentence uses present perfect tense (have + past participle).
7. Rearrange the following words/phrases to make meaningful sentences :
(2 × 1 = 2 marks)
- Reena / a letter / to Akash / will / write.
Answer: Reena will write a letter to Akash. - be / cultivated / must / habits / good.
Answer: Good habits must be cultivated.
Solution:
- The correct order is subject (Reena) + auxiliary verb (will) + main verb (write) + object (a letter) + prepositional phrase (to Akash).
- The correct order is adjective (Good) + subject (habits) + modal verb (must) + auxiliary verb (be) + past participle (cultivated).
8. Join the following sentences using the relative pronouns given in brackets :
(2 × 1 = 2 marks)
- I saw Mohini. She was a lecturer. (who)
Answer: I saw Mohini, who was a lecturer. - The Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan. It is very beautiful. (which)
Answer: The Taj Mahal, which was built by Shah Jahan, is very beautiful.
Solution:
- The relative pronoun "who" is used for people. The second sentence describes Mohini, so it becomes a non-defining relative clause: "I saw Mohini, who was a lecturer."
- The relative pronoun "which" is used for things. The second sentence describes the Taj Mahal, so it becomes a non-defining relative clause: "The Taj Mahal, which was built by Shah Jahan, is very beautiful."
9. Rewrite the following sentences by changing them from direct to indirect speech :
(4 × 1 = 4)
-
Direct: The teacher said to Hari, “You are a good player.”
Indirect: The teacher told Hari that he was a good player.Explanation: The reporting verb "said to" changes to "told". The pronoun "you" changes to "he" (referring to Hari). The present tense "are" changes to past tense "was". The conjunction "that" is used.
-
Direct: Seema said to Geeta, “Do you play football?”
Indirect: Seema asked Geeta if she played football.Explanation: For a yes/no question, "said to" becomes "asked", and "if" or "whether" is used. The pronoun "you" changes to "she". The present tense "play" changes to past tense "played".
-
Direct: The doctor said to the patient, “How are you now?”
Indirect: The doctor asked the patient how he was then.Explanation: For a wh-question, the question word "how" is retained. "Said to" becomes "asked". "You" changes to "he", "are" changes to "was", and "now" changes to "then".
-
Direct: The captain said to the soldiers, “March forward.”
Indirect: The captain ordered the soldiers to march forward.Explanation: For an imperative sentence (command), "said to" changes to "ordered" (or "commanded"). The verb in the reported speech becomes "to + base form" (infinitive).
10. Complete the following sentences by choosing the correct passive forms :
(2 × 1 = 2)
-
(i) A lesson has been taught by the teacher.
Options:
- (a) will taught
- (b) are taught
- (c) have taught
- (d) has been taught ✓
Explanation: The subject "A lesson" is singular, so the correct passive form uses "has been taught" (present perfect passive). Options (a), (b), and (c) are grammatically incorrect for this singular subject.
-
(ii) New seeds are bought from the market by farmers.
Options:
- (a) is bought
- (b) are bought ✓
- (c) has bought
- (d) had bought
Explanation: The subject "New seeds" is plural, so the correct passive form is "are bought" (simple present passive). Options (a), (c), and (d) are incorrect because they use singular verbs or active voice.
