\( {}_4^9 \text{Be} + {}_2^4 \text{He} \rightarrow {}_6^{12} \text{C} + {}_0^1 \text{n} \)

Write the following nuclear reaction by Bethe method :

\( {}_4^9 \text{Be} + {}_2^4 \text{He} \rightarrow {}_6^{12} \text{C} + {}_0^1 \text{n} \)

Solution: The Bethe method (also known as the Bethe-Weizsäcker cycle) describes the fusion of beryllium-9 with an alpha particle to form carbon-12 and a neutron. The balanced nuclear reaction is: \( {}_4^9 \text{Be} + {}_2^4 \text{He} \rightarrow {}_6^{12} \text{C} + {}_0^1 \text{n} \).

A carbonyl compound on reduction by Zn - Hg (zinc amalgam) and HCl gives an alkane. Give the name of the reaction.

Solution: This reaction is called the Clemmensen reduction. In this reaction, a carbonyl group (C=O) in aldehydes or ketones is reduced to a methylene group (CH₂) using zinc amalgam (Zn-Hg) and concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl), yielding an alkane.

Give the names of sugar units obtained on hydrolysis of sucrose.

Solution: On hydrolysis, sucrose (C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁) breaks down into one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose. Both are monosaccharides.

Write the name and structural formula of a chiral molecule in which chiral centre is not present.

Solution: An example is allene (1,2-propadiene). Its structural formula is H₂C=C=CH₂. Although it has no chiral carbon atom (no carbon with four different substituents), the molecule is chiral due to the cumulative double bonds (axial chirality). The two terminal carbon atoms are each bonded to two hydrogen atoms, but the spatial arrangement makes the molecule non-superimposable on its mirror image.

Write one test to differentiate ethanol and phenol.

Solution: Ferric chloride test: Add a few drops of neutral ferric chloride (FeCl₃) solution to the compound. Phenol gives a violet or purple color due to the formation of a colored complex, while ethanol does not give any color change. This test distinguishes phenol (aromatic) from ethanol (aliphatic).

Aldehydes are good reducing agent. Explain with an example.

Solution: Aldehydes can act as reducing agents because they are easily oxidized to carboxylic acids. For example, in the Tollens' test, an aldehyde (like acetaldehyde, CH₃CHO) reduces the silver ion (Ag⁺) in Tollens' reagent (ammoniacal silver nitrate) to metallic silver, forming a silver mirror on the test tube. The aldehyde itself is oxidized to the corresponding carboxylic acid (acetic acid, CH₃COOH). The reaction is: CH₃CHO + 2[Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ + 2OH⁻ → CH₃COO⁻ + 2Ag↓ + 4NH₃ + 2H₂O. Ketones do not show this property.

NH₃, C₆H₅NH₂, (CH₃)₂NH, CH₃NH₂

Arrange the following in increasing order of their basicity :

NH₃, C₆H₅NH₂, (CH₃)₂NH, CH₃NH₂

Solution: The increasing order of basicity is: C₆H₅NH₂ (aniline) < NH₃ (ammonia) < CH₃NH₂ (methylamine) < (CH₃)₂NH (dimethylamine).

Explanation: Basicity depends on the availability of the lone pair on nitrogen. In aniline, the lone pair is delocalized into the benzene ring, making it the weakest base. In ammonia, there is no alkyl group to donate electrons. Methylamine has one electron-donating methyl group, increasing basicity. Dimethylamine has two methyl groups, further increasing electron density on nitrogen, making it the strongest base among these.

Write the structural formulae of polar and non-polar forms of C₂H₂Cl₂.

       Cl H
         \ /
          C = C
         / \
       H Cl
       Cl Cl
         \ /
          C = C
         / \
       H H
           Cl
            \
             C = C
            / \
          Cl H
                   \
                    H

Give the name of monomer unit of PVC and one use of PVC.

             3' - T A C G - 5'

Correct Matching:

  • (a) Nylone 66 → (iv) Fibres
  • (b) Bakelite → (iii) Thermosetting
  • (c) PVC → (i) Thermoplastic
  • (d) Natural rubber → (ii) Elastomer

Give four main differences between DNA and RNA.

DNA RNA
1. Sugar is deoxyribose. 1. Sugar is ribose.
2. Bases: Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine. 2. Bases: Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Uracil.
3. Double-stranded helix. 3. Usually single-stranded.
4. Stores genetic information. 4. Involved in protein synthesis and gene expression.

Explain how detergent is superior than soap.

Detergents are superior to soaps because:

  • They work effectively in hard water (soaps form scum with Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions).
  • They are more effective in acidic conditions (soaps get hydrolyzed).
  • They have stronger cleansing action due to better surface tension reduction.
  • They are synthetic and can be tailored for specific uses.

Explain cationic detergent with example.

Cationic detergents have a positively charged head group (cationic part) that is responsible for cleansing. They are often used as germicides and fabric softeners.

Example: Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) – used in hair conditioners and antiseptics.

Give two main qualities of rocket propellants.

  • High specific impulse (efficient thrust per unit mass).
  • Stable and controllable combustion (safe and predictable).

Define chromophores and auxochromes.

  • Chromophore: A group of atoms in a molecule responsible for its color (e.g., -NO₂, -C=O, -N=N-).
  • Auxochrome: A group that intensifies the color of a chromophore (e.g., -OH, -NH₂, -Cl).

Give the dispersion medium and dispersed phase of the following colloids:

Colloid Dispersion Medium Dispersed Phase
(a) दूध (Milk) Liquid (water) Liquid (fat globules)

Draw a diagram showing Tyndall effect.

(Diagram description: A beam of light passing through a colloidal solution (e.g., milk in water) is scattered, making the path of light visible. The diagram shows a light source, a colloidal solution in a beaker, and scattered light rays emerging sideways.)

20. (i) Give the dispersion medium and dispersed phase in the following colloids:

  • (a) Milk: Dispersion medium – Water (liquid), Dispersed phase – Fat (liquid).
  • (b) Smoke: Dispersion medium – Air (gas), Dispersed phase – Solid particles (carbon, ash).

20. (ii) Draw the diagram showing Tyndall effect.

Diagram: A beam of light passing through a colloidal solution (e.g., milk or smoke) becomes visible due to scattering of light by colloidal particles. The path of light is clearly seen when viewed from the side.

(Note: In text, describe the setup: a light source, a colloidal solution in a beaker, and a visible light beam inside the solution.)

20. (iii) For Al(OH)₃ sol, arrange the following in increasing order of their coagulation power:

Given electrolytes: KCl, K₃PO₄, K₂SO₄, K₃[Fe(CN)₆]

Explanation: Coagulation power depends on the charge of the ion that neutralizes the sol. Al(OH)₃ is a positive sol, so the negative ion (anion) causes coagulation. Higher the charge on the anion, greater the coagulation power.

  • KCl gives Cl⁻ (charge -1)
  • K₂SO₄ gives SO₄²⁻ (charge -2)
  • K₃PO₄ gives PO₄³⁻ (charge -3)
  • K₃[Fe(CN)₆] gives [Fe(CN)₆]³⁻ (charge -3, but larger size and higher charge density)

Increasing order of coagulation power: KCl < K₂SO₄ < K₃PO₄ < K₃[Fe(CN)₆]

20. (iv) Draw labelled diagram for electrophoresis.

Diagram: A U-tube filled with colloidal solution (e.g., Al(OH)₃ sol). Two electrodes (anode and cathode) are inserted at the ends. When electric current is passed, colloidal particles move towards the oppositely charged electrode. For positive sol, particles move towards cathode (negative electrode).

(Labels: Anode (+), Cathode (-), Colloidal solution, Movement of particles.)

21. (i) Identify X in the following nuclear reactions:

  • (a) ²³Na + ¹n → ²⁴Na + X
Answer: X is a gamma photon (γ) or energy. (Balancing: mass number 23+1=24, atomic number 11+0=11, so product is ²⁴Na, no change in Z, so X is γ.)
  • (b) ²⁷Al + X → ²⁴Na + ⁴He
    Answer: X is a neutron (¹n). (Balancing: mass number 27+? = 24+4 → ?=1; atomic number 13+? = 11+2 → ?=0, so X is neutron.)

21. (ii) Name the types of nuclear reactions:

  • (a) ²³⁸U + ¹n → ²³⁹U + γ
Answer: This is a neutron capture reaction (or radiative capture).
  • (b) ²³⁵U + ¹n → ¹⁴¹Ba + ⁹²Kr + 3 ¹n
Answer: This is a nuclear fission reaction.

22. Identify X in the following nuclear reactions:

(a) \( {}_{11}^{23} \text{Na} + {}_{0}^{1} n \rightarrow {}_{2}^{4} \text{He} + X\)

Solution: Sum of mass numbers: 23 + 1 = 24; sum of atomic numbers: 11 + 0 = 11. For products: He has mass 4, atomic 2. So X must have mass number = 24 - 4 = 20, atomic number = 11 - 2 = 9. Thus X is \( {}_{9}^{20} \text{F}\) (Fluorine-20).

(b) \( {}_{7}^{14} \text{N} + X \rightarrow {}_{8}^{17} \text{O} + {}_{1}^{1} \text{H}\)

Solution: For products: mass = 17 + 1 = 18, atomic = 8 + 1 = 9. For N: mass 14, atomic 7. So X must have mass = 18 - 14 = 4, atomic = 9 - 7 = 2. Thus X is \( {}_{2}^{4} \text{He}\) (alpha particle).

23. Mention the types of the following nuclear reactions:

(a) \( {}_{92}^{238} \text{U} + {}_{0}^{1} n \rightarrow {}_{92}^{239} \text{U} + \gamma\)

Type: Neutron capture (or radiative capture) reaction.

(b) \( {}_{92}^{235} \text{U} + {}_{0}^{1} n \rightarrow {}_{56}^{141} \text{Ba} + {}_{36}^{92} \text{Kr} + 3 {}_{0}^{1} n\)

Type: Nuclear fission reaction.

24. (i) Write the functional isomers of n-butyl amine.

n-Butyl amine (C4H11N) has the molecular formula C4H11N. Its functional isomers (with same formula but different functional groups) include:

  • Diethylamine (C2H5)2NH (secondary amine)
  • Ethylmethylamine (C2H5)(CH3)NH (secondary amine)
  • Trimethylamine (CH3)3N (tertiary amine)
  • Isobutylamine (CH3)2CHCH2NH2 (primary amine, chain isomer)

Note: Functional isomers specifically refer to compounds with different functional groups (e.g., primary vs secondary/tertiary amines).

24. (ii) How will you distinguish primary and secondary amines by Hinsberg reagent?

Hinsberg reagent is benzenesulfonyl chloride (C6H5SO2Cl). The test:

  • Primary amine: Reacts to form a sulfonamide which is soluble in aqueous KOH (due to acidic N-H proton). On acidification, the sulfonamide precipitates.
  • Secondary amine: Reacts to form a sulfonamide which is insoluble in aqueous KOH (no acidic proton). It remains as a solid or oil.
  • Tertiary amine: Does not react with Hinsberg reagent (no N-H bond).

Thus, primary amines give a clear solution in KOH, while secondary amines give a precipitate or turbidity.

24. (iii) Draw the intermolecular hydrogen bonding in primary amine.

In primary amines (R-NH2), intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurs between the hydrogen atom of one molecule and the nitrogen atom of another. The diagram:

    H
    |
R—N—H ··· N—R
    | |
    H H

Each N-H bond can act as a hydrogen bond donor, and the lone pair on nitrogen acts as acceptor, leading to chain-like association.

25. (i) Write the names of components of power alcohol and give one use.

Power alcohol is a mixture of:

  • Petrol (gasoline) – about 80%
  • Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) – about 20% (anhydrous)

Use: It is used as a fuel in internal combustion engines (e.g., automobiles) to reduce pollution and conserve petroleum.

25. (ii) Give equations for dehydrogenation reactions of primary and secondary alcohols.

Primary alcohol: On dehydrogenation (e.g., with Cu at 573 K), it gives an aldehyde.

\[ \text{R-CH}_2\text{OH} \xrightarrow{\text{Cu, 573 K}} \text{R-CHO} + \text{H}_2 \]

Example: Ethanol → Ethanal: CH3CH2OH → CH3CHO + H2

Secondary alcohol: On dehydrogenation, it gives a ketone.

\[ \text{R-CHOH-R'} \xrightarrow{\text{Cu, 573 K}} \text{R-CO-R'} + \text{H}_2 \]

Example: Isopropanol → Acetone: (CH3)2CHOH → (CH3)2CO + H2

25. (iii) Write equations for the following preparations:

(a) From primary amine to ethyl alcohol:

Primary amine (e.g., ethylamine) reacts with nitrous acid (HNO2) to give alcohol.

\[ \text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{NH}_2 + \text{HNO}_2 \rightarrow \text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{OH} + \text{N}_2 + \text{H}_2\text{O} \]

(b) From diethyl ether to ethyl alcohol:

Diethyl ether is cleaved by hydroiodic acid (HI) to give ethyl alcohol and ethyl iodide.

\[ \text{C}_2\text{H}_5\text{OC}_2\text{H}_5 + \text{HI} \rightarrow \text{C}_2\text{H}_5\text{OH} + \text{C}_2\text{H}_5\text{I} \]

Alternatively, hydrolysis with dilute acid also yields ethanol.

CH₃COCl + 2NH₃ → CH₃CONH₂ + NH₄Cl

CH₃CHO + [O] → CH₃COOH

CCl₃CHO, CH₃CHO, C₆H₅CHO, C₆H₅CH₂CHO

C=O ↔ C⁺−O⁻

SS—4-2—Chem. II 535

Answer the following questions:

(i) Give equations for the following preparations:

(a) Acetic acid from acetaldehyde:

Acetaldehyde is oxidized to acetic acid using an oxidizing agent like potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) in acidic medium.

CH3CHO + [O] → CH3COOH

(Or using Tollen's reagent or Fehling's solution)

(b) Acetic anhydride from acetic acid:

Acetic acid is heated with phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) or by dehydration using acetic anhydride itself.

2 CH3COOH → (CH3CO)2O + H2O

(Dehydration agent: P2O5 or concentrated H2SO4)

(ii) Sort out the aldehydes which give Cannizzaro reaction:

Given aldehydes: CCl3CHO, CH3CHO, C6H5CHO, C6H11CHO.

Answer: Aldehydes that give Cannizzaro reaction are those without an α-hydrogen atom. Among the given:

  • CCl3CHO (chloral) – no α-hydrogen, gives Cannizzaro reaction.
  • C6H5CHO (benzaldehyde) – no α-hydrogen, gives Cannizzaro reaction.
  • CH3CHO and C6H11CHO have α-hydrogens, so they undergo aldol condensation, not Cannizzaro.

Correct aldehydes: CCl3CHO and C6H5CHO.

(iii) Draw the polar structure of carbonyl group.

The carbonyl group (C=O) is polar due to the high electronegativity of oxygen. The resonance structures show a partial positive charge on carbon and partial negative charge on oxygen.

δ+   δ-
C = O   ↔   C — O+

(The polar structure indicates the carbon is electrophilic and oxygen is nucleophilic.)
