It is only a little twig
With a green bud at the end;
But if you plant it,
And water it,
And set it where the sun will be above it,
It will grow into a tall bush
With many flowers,
And leaves which thrust hither and thither sparkling.
From its roots will come freshness,
And beneath it the grass-blades
Will bend and recover themselves,
And clash one upon another
In the flowing wind.

But if you take my twig
And throw it into a closet
With mousetraps and blunted tools,
It will shrivel and waste.
And, same day,
When you open the door,
You will think it an old twisted nail,
And sweep it into the dust bin
With other rubbish.

Write a speech on 'Plastic Pollution' in about 50-200 words for your School Notice Board.

Speech: Plastic Pollution

Good morning, respected teachers and dear friends. Today, I want to talk about a serious issue – plastic pollution. Plastic has become an inseparable part of our daily lives, but its overuse is harming our environment. Plastic waste clogs our rivers, pollutes our oceans, and harms wildlife. It takes hundreds of years to decompose, releasing toxic chemicals. We must reduce our plastic usage by carrying cloth bags, using reusable bottles, and avoiding single-use plastics. Recycling and proper disposal are also important. Let us pledge to say no to plastic and protect our planet for future generations. Together, we can make a difference. Thank you.

(LITERARY TERMS)

23) Write notes on any two of the following literary terms in about 50 words each. [2×3=6]

  1. Metaphysical poetry.

Metaphysical poetry, popular in the 17th century, is characterized by intellectual wit, complex imagery, and philosophical themes. Poets like John Donne used conceits (extended metaphors) and explored love, religion, and mortality. The style blends emotion with intellect, often using colloquial language and surprising contrasts.

  2. Indo-Anglian Literature.

Indo-Anglian literature refers to works written in English by Indian authors. It reflects Indian culture, traditions, and social issues while using English as the medium. Key writers include R.K. Narayan, Mulk Raj Anand, and Raja Rao. This literature bridges Indian and Western literary traditions.

  3. Impressionism.

Impressionism in literature focuses on subjective impressions and sensory experiences rather than objective reality. Writers use vivid imagery, fragmented narratives, and stream-of-consciousness to capture fleeting moments. It emphasizes mood and atmosphere over plot, influenced by the Impressionist art movement.

  4. Interior Monologue.

Interior monologue is a narrative technique that presents a character's inner thoughts, feelings, and reactions directly. It often mimics the natural flow of consciousness, without logical order. Used by writers like James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, it provides deep psychological insight into characters.

SECTION - E

(TEXT)

24) Answer any two of the following textual questions in about 100 words each. [2×6=12]

  1. Comment on the significance of the title of the story 'One Centimetre'.

The title 'One Centimetre' is highly symbolic. It refers to the small difference in height that becomes a major issue in the story. The protagonist, Tao Ying, is accused of lying about her son's age because he is one centimetre shorter than required for a free ticket. This tiny measurement represents the rigid, bureaucratic rules that ignore human emotions and truth. The title highlights how a trivial physical detail can challenge a mother's integrity and love. Ultimately, it underscores the conflict between strict regulations and personal values, showing that even one centimetre can carry immense emotional weight.

  2. What, according to the poet, is the nature of true love? ("A Lecture Upon the Shadow")

In "A Lecture Upon the Shadow," John Donne describes true love as constant and unchanging, like the sun at noon. He uses the metaphor of shadows to explain that love in its early stages (morning) and later stages (evening) is shadowed by doubt or decline. True love, however, exists in the "noon" of the relationship, where there are no shadows—meaning no secrets, no pretense, and no fading. The poet emphasizes that genuine love is transparent, stable, and free from the deceptions that time and change bring. It is a love that remains bright and honest without any darkness.

  3. What was the 'message' of Krishna to Arjun in the Bhagwad Gita? Did he follow it? ("The Argumentative Indian")

In the Bhagwad Gita, Krishna's message to Arjun was to perform his duty (dharma) as a warrior without attachment to the results. He taught that one should fight for righteousness, even if it means killing loved ones, because the soul is eternal. Krishna emphasized selfless action (nishkama karma) and devotion to God. According to Amartya Sen in "The Argumentative Indian," Arjun did not blindly follow this advice. Instead, he questioned and argued with Krishna, engaging in a deep dialogue. Sen uses this to highlight India's tradition of argumentation and debate, showing that Arjun's acceptance came through reasoning, not blind obedience.

25) Answer any four of the following questions in about 50 words each. [4×3=12]

  1. Describe the kind of life Bessie lived. ("To-morrow")

Bessie lived a lonely and monotonous life. She was a waitress who spent her days working in a café, always hoping for a better future. Her life was filled with routine and waiting—waiting for her son to return or for some change. She found solace in small dreams and the promise of "tomorrow," which never seemed to arrive.

Section – E (Poetry & Drama)

(iii) What are Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love? ("The Divine Image")

In William Blake's poem "The Divine Image," Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love are described as the four virtues that constitute the divine image in which humanity is made. They are the essential attributes of God that are also found in human beings, and through these virtues, humans can pray to God and understand His nature.

(iv) Describe the main characteristics of a novel. ("Why the Novel Matters")

According to D.H. Lawrence in "Why the Novel Matters," the novel is the most important form of art because it deals with the whole, living human being. Its main characteristics include: presenting life as a living, changing organism; showing the interplay of characters and their relationships; revealing the complexity of human nature; and offering a complete, truthful picture of life without moralizing or abstracting.

(v) What trick did Pramod use to impress Manjula? ("Broken Images")

In Girish Karnad's play "Broken Images," Pramod uses the trick of pretending to be a great admirer of Manjula's writing. He flatters her by claiming to have read all her works and praises her talent excessively. This deception is aimed at winning her affection and making her believe he is genuinely interested in her literary abilities.

(vi) What, according to Henry, are 'growing pains'? ("How He Lied to Her Husband")

In George Bernard Shaw's play "How He Lied to Her Husband," Henry refers to 'growing pains' as the emotional and psychological discomfort that comes with maturity and self-awareness. He uses this term to describe the painful process of realizing one's own faults and limitations, particularly in the context of love and relationships.

Discuss the lives of the women of the Haveli.

The women of the Haveli lead lives bound by strict traditions and patriarchal norms. They are confined to domestic roles, with limited freedom and autonomy. Their daily routines revolve around household chores, religious rituals, and maintaining family honor. Despite these restrictions, they form strong bonds of sisterhood and support each other. The older women, like the mother-in-law, uphold traditions, while younger women like Geeta gradually introduce subtle changes. Their lives reflect a struggle between preserving cultural heritage and seeking personal fulfillment, highlighting the complexities of women's existence in a traditional Rajasthani household.
