Short Answers Type Questions

(Subscription in Arrear) 5,000
(Subscription received in advance) 5,000
(Subscription in Arrear) 6,000
(Subscription received in advance) 0,000
(Subscription received during the year) 50,000

From the following informations, calculate amount of subscription, which will be shown in Income and Expenditure Account.

Solution:

= 50,000 + 6,000 - 5,000 + 5,000 - 0,000

= ₹ 56,000

Calculation: Subscription for I&E A/c = Received + Closing Arrear - Opening Arrear + Opening Advance - Closing Advance = 50,000 + 6,000 - 5,000 + 5,000 - 0 = ₹56,000

P and Q are partners in a firm. P withdraws ₹ 2,000 at the beginning of each month. Whereas, Q withdraws ₹ 4,000 at the end of each month during the whole year. Interest on drawing is charged @ 12% per annum. Calculate the amount of interest on drawing at the end of the year.

Solution:

(Interest on P's Drawings):

(Interest on Q's Drawings):

Capital of the firm is ₹ 4,00,000. Normal rate of return is 10% and average profit of the firm is ₹ 60,000. Goodwill is to be valued at three years purchase of super profits. Calculate the value of Goodwill.

Solution:

Calculation: Normal Profit = Capital × NRR = 4,00,000 × 10% = ₹40,000; Super Profit = Average Profit - Normal Profit = 60,000 - 40,000 = ₹20,000; Goodwill = Super Profit × 3 = ₹60,000.

7.

X and Y are partners sharing profits in the ratio of 5:4. They admit Z into the firm for 1/3rd share of profit, which he takes 2/9th from X and 1/9th from Y and brings ₹500 as goodwill (premium) in cash. Pass necessary journal entries on Z's admission.

Solution:

Step 1: Calculate Sacrificing Ratio

X's sacrifice = 2/9
Y's sacrifice = 1/9
Sacrificing Ratio = 2/9 : 1/9 = 2:1

Step 2: Journal Entries

Date Particulars L.F. Debit (₹) Credit (₹)
Bank A/c Dr. 500
To Premium for Goodwill A/c 500
(Being premium for goodwill brought in by Z)
Premium for Goodwill A/c Dr. 500
To X's Capital A/c (500 × 2/3) 333.33
To Y's Capital A/c (500 × 1/3) 166.67
(Being premium for goodwill distributed among sacrificing partners in sacrificing ratio 2:1)

  1. (i) प्रस्तावित लाभांश (Proposed Dividend)
  2. (ii) क्रणपत्र (Debenture)

Answer:

(Other Current Liabilities)
(Long-term Borrowings)

Prepare Common Size Balance Sheet from the following information :

(Percentage %)
(Equity & Liabilities)
समता (Equity) 6,00,000 75%
(Long term Debt) 2,00,000 25%
योग (Total) 8,00,000 100%
(Assets)
(Fixed Assets) 6,40,000 80%
(Current Assets) 1,60,000 20%
योग (Total) 8,00,000 100%

If opening stock is ₹ 40,000, Net purchases ₹ 2,00,000, Direct Expenses ₹ 40,000 and closing stock is ₹ 35,000, then calculate cost of goods sold.

हल (Solution):

Current liabilities of Jatin Ltd. are ₹ 60,000. Its current ratio is 3:1 and Liquidity ratio is 2.25:1. Calculate the value of Inventories (Stock).

हल:

(Current Liabilities) = ₹ 60,000

(Current Assets) = 3 × ₹ 60,000 = ₹ 1,80,000

(Liquid Assets) = 2.25 × ₹ 60,000 = ₹ 1,35,000

Amount paid for Stationery during 2020-21 was ₹ 10,000.

Priya, Suman and Shalu are partners in the ratio of 5:3:2. A guarantee is given to Shalu for a minimum profit of ₹ 80,000 per annum by the firm. Any deficiency in that amount will be borne by Priya and Suman in the ratio of 2:3. During the year 2020-21 the firm earned a profit of ₹ 2,50,000. Prepare P&L Appropriation A/c of the firm.

(Profit & Loss Appropriation Account)

₹90,000 = 2.5x - x = 1.5x

x = ₹90,000 / 1.5 = ₹60,000

Question (Option 1)

A and B share the profits of a business in the ratio of 5:3. They admitted C into the firm for a 1/4 share in profits, which is to be contributed equally by A and B. On the date of admission of C, the Balance Sheet of the firm was as follows:

Liabilities Amount (₹) Assets Amount (₹)
A's Capital 50,000 Machinery 35,000
B's Capital 30,000 Furniture 20,000
General Reserve 6,000 Stock 30,000
Creditors 4,000 Bank 5,000
Total 90,000 Total 90,000

Terms of C's admission:

  1. C will bring ₹30,000 for his share of capital and ₹8,000 for his share of goodwill.
  2. Goodwill of the firm has been valued at 3 years' purchase of super profit of ₹8,000.
  3. Machinery, Furniture, and Stock are revalued at ₹30,000, ₹22,000, and ₹28,000 respectively.

Pass necessary journal entries from the above information.

Solution

Step 1: Calculate Sacrificing Ratio
Old ratio of A and B = 5:3
C's share = 1/4 (to be contributed equally by A and B)
Sacrifice by A = 1/4 × 1/2 = 1/8
Sacrifice by B = 1/4 × 1/2 = 1/8
New ratio: A = 5/8 - 1/8 = 4/8 = 1/2; B = 3/8 - 1/8 = 2/8 = 1/4; C = 1/4
Sacrificing ratio = 1:1

13.

M and N are partners in a firm sharing profits in the ratio of 2:1. Their balance sheet as on 31st March, 2021 was as follows. They decide to share the profits equally w.e.f. April 1, 2021.

Balance Sheet

Liabilities Amount (₹) Assets Amount (₹)
Outstanding Salary 30,000 Cash at Bank 40,000
Reserve 20,000 Debtors 20,000
Capital: Stock 60,000
M 1,00,000 Furniture 80,000
N 60,000 Plant 50,000
Goodwill
Total 2,10,000 Total 2,50,000

Note: The total of liabilities side is ₹2,10,000 and assets side is ₹2,50,000. The difference of ₹40,000 is assumed to be Goodwill (not shown in the original balance sheet).

It was also decided that:

  • The goodwill of the firm at this date be valued at ₹36,000.

Prepare Partner's Capital Account

Solution:

Step 1: Calculate the sacrificing ratio

Old ratio (M:N) = 2:1

New ratio (M:N) = 1:1

Sacrifice = Old share - New share

M's sacrifice = 2/3 - 1/2 = (4-3)/6 = 1/6

N's sacrifice = 1/3 - 1/2 = (2-3)/6 = -1/6 (gain)

So, M sacrifices 1/6 and N gains 1/6.

Step 2: Adjustment for Goodwill

Goodwill of the firm = ₹36,000

M's share of goodwill to be compensated by N = ₹36,000 × 1/6 = ₹6,000

Step 3: Adjustment for Reserve

Reserve = ₹20,000

M's share = ₹20,000 × 2/3 = ₹13,333.33

N's share = ₹20,000 × 1/3 = ₹6,666.67

In new ratio (1:1), each gets ₹10,000.

M gives up = ₹13,333.33 - ₹10,000 = ₹3,333.33

N gains = ₹10,000 - ₹6,666.67 = ₹3,333.33

Step 4: Partner's Capital Accounts

Particulars M (₹) N (₹)
Opening Balance 1,00,000 60,000
Add: Reserve (adjusted) 10,000 10,000
Less: Goodwill adjustment (to M) (6,000)
Add: Goodwill adjustment (from N) 6,000
Closing Balance 1,16,000 64,000

Solution:

Step 1: Calculation of amounts

Total shares issued = 20,000 shares of ₹10 each at 10% premium

Issue price = ₹10 + ₹1 (premium) = ₹11 per share

Application money = ₹4 (including premium ₹1)

Allotment money = ₹4

First and final call = ₹11 - ₹4 - ₹4 = ₹3

Step 2: Application received and allotment

Applications received = 50,000 shares

Rejected applications = 10,000 shares (refunded)

Valid applications = 40,000 shares for 20,000 shares

Ratio of allotment = 20,000/40,000 = 1:2

Excess application money = 20,000 shares × ₹4 = ₹80,000

This excess is adjusted towards allotment.

Step 3: Vijay's case

Vijay applied for 4,000 shares

Allotted = 4,000 × 1/2 = 2,000 shares

Application money paid = 4,000 × ₹4 = ₹16,000

Application money for allotted shares = 2,000 × ₹4 = ₹8,000

Excess application money = ₹16,000 - ₹8,000 = ₹8,000 (adjusted to allotment)

Allotment due = 2,000 × ₹4 = ₹8,000

Allotment not paid = ₹8,000 - ₹8,000 (adjusted) = ₹0

First and final call due = 2,000 × ₹3 = ₹6,000 (not paid)

Total calls in arrears = ₹6,000

Shares forfeited = 2,000 shares

Step 4: Re-issue of forfeited shares

2,000 shares re-issued at ₹8 per share fully paid

Amount received = 2,000 × ₹8 = ₹16,000

Face value = 2,000 × ₹10 = ₹20,000

Discount on re-issue = ₹20,000 - ₹16,000 = ₹4,000

Amount forfeited = Application money (₹8,000) + Excess application (₹8,000) = ₹16,000

Transfer to Capital Reserve = ₹16,000 - ₹4,000 = ₹12,000

Sanjana Ltd. – Journal Entries

Question: Sanjana Ltd. invited applications for the issue of 20,000 equity shares of ₹10 each at a premium of 10%. The amount was payable as follows:

  • On Application: ₹4 (including premium)
  • On Allotment: ₹4
  • Remaining on First and Final Call

Applications were received for 50,000 shares. Incomplete applications of 10,000 shares were cancelled and the amount was refunded. Remaining applications were allotted on a Pro-rata basis. Excess application money is used for allotment. Vijay, who applied for 4,000 shares, could not pay allotment and First and Final call money, and his shares were forfeited. All these shares were re-issued @ ₹8 per share as fully paid up. Give necessary Journal entries in the books of the company.

Solution:

Step 1: Calculate the number of shares applied and allotted.

Total applications received: 50,000 shares
Incomplete applications cancelled: 10,000 shares
Valid applications: 40,000 shares
Shares to be issued: 20,000 shares
Pro-rata ratio = 20,000 / 40,000 = 1:2 (i.e., 1 share allotted for every 2 applied)

Step 2: Calculate amounts.

Face value per share = ₹10
Premium = 10% of ₹10 = ₹1
Issue price = ₹11

  • Application money (including premium ₹1) = ₹4 per share
  • Allotment money = ₹4 per share
  • First and Final Call = ₹11 - (₹4 + ₹4) = ₹3 per share

Step 3: Application money received and adjusted.

Application money received on 40,000 shares @ ₹4 = ₹1,60,000
Application money due on 20,000 shares @ ₹4 = ₹80,000
Excess application money = ₹1,60,000 - ₹80,000 = ₹80,000
This excess is used towards allotment.

Step 4: Vijay's case.

Vijay applied for 4,000 shares. Allotted = 4,000 × 1/2 = 2,000 shares.

  • Application money paid by Vijay = 4,000 × ₹4 = ₹16,000
  • Application money due on allotted shares = 2,000 × ₹4 = ₹8,000
  • Excess application money = ₹16,000 - ₹8,000 = ₹8,000 (used for allotment)
  • Allotment money due on 2,000 shares = 2,000 × ₹4 = ₹8,000
  • Since excess application money (₹8,000) is used, allotment money due = ₹8,000 - ₹8,000 = ₹0
  • First and Final Call due = 2,000 × ₹3 = ₹6,000
  • Vijay did not pay allotment (₹0) and call (₹6,000). So, total unpaid = ₹6,000

Step 5: Forfeiture and Re-issue.

Amount received from Vijay before forfeiture = Application money (₹8,000) + Allotment (₹0) + Call (₹0) = ₹8,000
Calls in arrears = ₹6,000
Forfeiture amount = Amount received - Calls in arrears = ₹8,000 - ₹6,000 = ₹2,000 (but this is the amount credited to Share Forfeiture Account; however, the premium on application is already accounted. Let's calculate properly.)

On forfeiture, the amount already received (including premium) is ₹8,000. The unpaid amount is ₹6,000. So, Share Forfeiture Account will be credited with ₹8,000 (the amount received).

Re-issue of 2,000 shares @ ₹8 each as fully paid up (face value ₹10). Discount on re-issue = ₹10 - ₹8 = ₹2 per share. Total discount = 2,000 × ₹2 = ₹4,000. This discount is adjusted from Share Forfeiture Account.

Balance in Share Forfeiture Account after re-issue = ₹8,000 - ₹4,000 = ₹4,000, transferred to Capital Reserve.
